The traditional heritage that has inspired the personal textile is a mix of Norwegian and Polish traits. The initial idea for the textile came from Polish Wycinanki Art, which is a traditional paper cutting craft. The bright colors and delicate shapes of the make an attention-grabbing pattern for the textile which has a lot of contrast. The background of the pattern is adapted from an Old Norwegian pattern. Beginning with just the textile background, the Polish paper forms are altered and arranged symmetrically on the block. When the 30” x 30” block is created it results in pattern full of repetition and color
The time spent working on creating a textile that related to my own heritage was very enjoyable. I had never taken the time to explore the arts that were associated with my culture. I found many beautiful things that inspired my design. I also wanted to create a pattern that repeated in a nice manner when multiplied. The colors are vibrant yet the hold a traditional value that is has been practiced for hundreds of years.
