Aging in Place
Learning about Aging in P;ace was very interesting and I found it to be similar to universal design. The cool thing about homes made for aging in place is that the design elements that have been used to make the house accessible for someone when they grow older did not make a negative impact on the space. In my research I found that the majority of residential houses looked so beautiful and the thought "handicapped friendly" did not rush to my mind. The incorporation of aesthetics and ADA requirements went together very well. There are many interesting features that I would want in my house as a young adult, not just when I grow older. Another thing that I found interesting was when designers left space for things to evolve in the future. For example, in one Seattle home there was a small reading nook that could be transformed into an elevator shaft down the road when they needed it.
